I did it. My first shot, tonight (7/21/2023) on my left side. I was nervous, excited, not sure what to expect. Didn’t feel a THING. So what do I have to prepare for this journey?
Protein shakes. Vitamins (B12, D, Magnesium, Zinc), Pre/Probiotic, Liquid IV, and lots of ideas about what to eat. Menu suggestions from this site:
MON | TUES | WED | THURS | FRI | SAT | SUN | |
BREAKFAST | A cup of low-fat yogurt Blueberries Almonds | Oatmeal pancakes | Apple and walnut french toast | Oatmeal muffins | Peanut butter cookies Skimmed milk | Boiled eggs with apple | Chia seeds pudding |
SNACK | Low-sugar almond and apple smoothie | Carrot and beet juice | Black bean and corn salad | Avocado with tuna salad | Baked sweet potato seasoned with lemon, salt, and pepper | Salad made of apple, cabbage, and beets, sprinkled with olive oil and lime | Roasted almonds |
LUNCH | Grilled veggie wrap with tomato sauce | Beans and vegetable soup | Honey-glazed salmon with vegetable rice | Chicken panini sandwich | Whole wheat pita Cooked lentils Cucumber, avocado, and carrots sides | Ham, egg, and spinach sandwich with tomato sauce | Chicken and vegetable pasta with cottage cheese |
SNACK | Boiled corn sprinkled with lime or lemon | Apples and apricots | Sugar-free cookie | Pear and peach | Boiled eggs with salt and pepper | Sugar-free brownie | Popcorn |
DINNER | Grilled rosemary chicken Avocado, berry, and spinach salad | Low-fat grilled chicken burger | Chicken and white bean stew with whole-grain bread | Chickpea pasta with cucumber tomato and lettuce salad | Fish stew with whole wheat bread | Oven-roasted salmon Mashed sweet potato | Air-fried chicken wings with tomato sauce |
Tips… avoid constipation with fluids and stool softeners, colace or dulcolax and some milk of magnesia or MiraLAX (or some combination of these). DRINK water. Lots of water, and electrolytes (Liquid IV, LMNT).
When taking this kind of medication, choosing nutrient-dense foods high in protein, fiber, and healthy carbs is important. Additionally, it is essential to stop eating when you feel full. By following a balanced, whole-food diet and incorporating the foods below, you are more likely to maximize your results.
Eating chicken, fish, or lean meat is a good way to get protein and feel fuller longer. These foods are low in calories, which can help you lose weight. Protein is also important for building and repairing muscles, which can help you achieve a slimmer physique.
Brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat bread are high in fiber and can help you feel full for longer. Some whole grains can also help regulate your blood sugar, which can help you lose body fat. Including whole grains into your diet is a great way to maximize your results. Try Ezekiel Bread.
Eating lots of fruits and vegetables can help you consume fewer calories and more fiber, vitamins, and minerals. These foods can also help you feel full longer, aiding your weight loss efforts. Aim for low-glycemic fruits and veggies like greens, lentils, berries, and apples. Additionally, snacking on fruits and veggies is a useful way to maintain a nutritious diet and avoid making bad choices. Packaging healthy snacks is especially helpful if you plan to be away from home for a long day.
Seeds and nuts are packed with healthy fats, protein, and fiber. Eating them while taking these drugs can help you feel satiated, which can help with weight loss. Additionally, nuts and seeds are high in essential minerals like magnesium and zinc, which support energy and a strong immune system.
Staying hydrated is important. Drinking lots of water can help you stay hydrated and aid in successful weight reduction. Drinking water before meals can also make you feel fuller and support your weight loss goals.
No foods are completely off-limits when taking these medications. However, some food should be limited or avoided altogether. This is because certain foods can increase side effects such as gassiness and bloating. Additionally, fatty and saturated foods can contribute to weight gain. Limiting the following foods reduces the possibility of increasing side effects you experience.
Some fruits and vegetables have a higher glycemic index than others. As a result, this can lead to blood sugar spikes. High-glycemic fruits to avoid include mango, pineapple, watermelon, and ripe bananas. High-glycemic veggies to avoid include potatoes and sweet corn. Consider reducing your intake of these foods and opt for low-glycemic fruits and veggies like apples, berries, greens, and non-starchy vegetables.
If you’re taking these meds, limiting sugary foods like candy, soda, and baked goods is a good idea. These types of sweets can cause your blood sugar to spike, which makes losing weight even harder. Sugar can also be very addictive, leading to overeating and getting in the way of achieving a leaner figure. When grocery shopping, make it a point to read the nutritional labels and be mindful of sugar content.
Processed foods such as white bread, pasta, and processed cereals should also be avoided if possible. This is because they are high in calories, sugar, and fat. They also lack nutrients and have a high glycemic index. This means that your body quickly converts them into glucose. As a result, your blood sugar levels spike. Additionally, processed foods can cause inflammation and slow your weight loss.
Fried foods like fast food are high in calories and unhealthy fats like trans-fat and saturated fat. They may be tough to digest and contribute to inflammation. These foods can also cause bloating, gassiness, and indigestion. Fatty foods may increase this symptom if you experience nausea while taking these meds. Try to swap fried food for something grilled to help cut down on excess calories, fats, and sodium.
It is also a good idea to avoid drinking soda and carbonated beverages when taking these meds. Sodas are high in sugar and calories and will spike your blood sugar levels. Soda has no nutritional value and can contribute to weight gain. Additionally, carbonated drinks like soda, beer, and carbonated water contain carbon dioxide. Therefore, they may increase some of the side effects like bloating or indigestion.
Alcoholic drinks can also contribute to weight gain because they’re loaded with calories. Drinking alcohol can also make you dehydrated and disrupt your sleep, making it even harder to lose weight. Additionally, consuming alcohol while taking this may increase your risk of lowering your blood sugar (hypoglycemia). As a result, this increases your risk for serious and even life-threatening symptoms.

Short list of some of the items on my wish list. First, a beekeeper’s journal/book. I’m always taking notes, jotting down lists, putting pen to paper (I just can’t go fully digital) and this is on my list:
For any beekeeper, this is the best journal, perfect for a gift for beekeeping enthusiasts on any of your gift lists. This is an affiliate link but as a beekeeper, I like the vintage, distressed, country cottage look:
Up next on my list of the best gifts for beekeepers, especially moms, a cute shirt. Anyone who has bees, loves honey bees or science and nature in general will like this. Perfect for your beekeeping mom. This is an amazon affiliate link, but I love it and as a beekeeper have to share:
This may be my favorite! I’ve seen these honeycomb or honey frame holders in restaurants in Europe (I’ve not been to Europe, but I follow a lot of beekeepers), anyway these can be found in restaurants, at fancy brunches. Honey doesn’t get any fresher than this! This is an affiliate link, but you must check it out even if you don’t purchase it. One of the BEST gifts for a beekeeper who likes to share his or her harvest:
NFTs. What are they? This is a GREAT video explaining them, and some ideas on how to mint a lot. If you are just getting started with NFTs and trying to figure out how to do them, check this out:
2022. The past two years we’ve struggled through a pandemic. The entire world has been locked down, masking, hoarding supplies, on the edge of panic time and time again and now Russia, specifically Putin, has attacked Ukraine. What world are we living in?
My heart aches for the people of Ukraine. They are being targeted and killed, sent from their homes, they are in war… in 2022. It’s not enough to make signs, to wear shirts, to post, to donate, to pray… but that is something at least. Here in the US, our hearts bleed for you….
So, there have been quite a few social media posts about Optavia being hard to get. And substitutes are REALLY not easy to find. Besides Optavia (Medifast) were can you get macros, nutrition for 100 – 110 good tasting calories? There really is, IMO, no substitute for all you get from Optavia. BUT Wonderslim meal replacement shakes seem pretty close. Bonus, the Wonderslim costs less, but I’ve not had them and can’t say how they taste. I do like the Optavia shakes, a lot.
This is the nutrition from a Diet Direct Wonderslim shake as seen here: https://www.dietdirect.com/wonderslim-aspartame-free-meal-shake-mocha-cream
And an Optavia Mocha shake seen here: https://www.optavia.com/essential-mocha-blast-shake-naturally-flavored/p/opt-mocha-shake-bx
I didn’t look at other products, and don’t represent either, but based on what I’ve seen online these two seem comparable. It did take awhile for my Optavia to ship, and I hope my next order doesn’t take long. But if I get in a shake bind, I may give the Diet Direct a try. If anyone knows any other good alternatives, please share.
Am I the only parent who can relate? From recipes and exercises to hair and skin products, everything in pop culture seems to come from TikTok.
